I Want You (1998)

Title: I Want You
... aka Beloved
Released: 1998
Genre: Crime / Drama / Romance
Runtime: 87 min
Country: UK
Language: English / Serbo-Croatian

Plot Summary: Helen is a young woman running a hairdressing salon; Bob is her boyfriend and local radio DJ; Honda is a mute kid who's secretly taping people's conversation and Smokey is Honda's sister who sings at local bar. New guy in town is the mysterious Martin, who shares some dark history with Helen and observes her from afar at first. Honda falls in love with Helen and starts taping her conversations with Bob, and that leads to reactivation of the Helen-Martin relationship.

Comments: I really liked this movie. I can't quite figure out why, however. It's not quite the psychological thrill that it was perhaps intended to be (we never really get into the head of Martin, a man obsessed with his old love, which most people think is what the film is supposed to be about), and the relationship between Helen and Honda never really becomes a focal point, but like City of Lost Children, it gains a lot of points by simply being a unique viewing experience.
The relationship that Honda has with Smokey (his sister) and Helen are realistic and almost heart warming. It would have been a more enjoyable movie if it simply focused on the trio, but the movie is very intelligent and thought provoking as it is.

Stealing Beauty (1996)

Title: Stealing Beauty
Released: 1996
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 113 min
Country: Italy / France / UK
Language: English / French / German / Spanish / Italian

Tagline: The most beautiful place to be is in love.

Plot Summary: For 20 years many visitors have come to the villa on an Italian hilltop owned by an English artist. Lucy, a 19-year-old American, was last there four years ago and wants to meet up again with the young Italian who kissed her and corresponded for a while. And she has brought the diary of her late mother filled with enigmatic poems that suggest Lucy was conceived on that hilltop. Lucy wants to find out if Daddy is the Italian war correspondent who wrote to her mother for 20 years. Then again Daddy could be the dying English playwright in residence or the artist who uses a chainsaw on tree trunks for his sculptures. The three, of course, have no idea that Lucy is there to solve a mystery. They, the artist's wife, daughter of that wife and the daughter's American lover are most intrigued by Lucy's virginity.

Comments: Perfect. This is an amazing movie. Sure, I may be overstating it, but I LOVED it! It is beautiful, captivating, and just perfect. I like the acting, I like the actors, I love the plot. Liv Tyler plays a young woman who travels to Italy to learn a few things about her family and love... her acting is perfect for the role she plays. They did a good job of casting her.

Scene Description: The Mummy star Rachel Weisz giving us a great view of her wonderful breasts as she lays by the pool topless and talks to Liv Tyler.

"Scarlet and the Black, The" (1993) (mini)

Title: Scarlet and the Black, The
Released: 1993
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 80 min (3 episodes)
Country: UK
Language: English

Comments: Period Drama Perfect. Ben Bolt's direction of Scarlet and Black is a worthy effort that translates the period romanticism with relish. The French romantic novel is visually brought to life by actor Ewan McGregor as Julian Sorrel, a young man of ambition and robust desire. Set in the beautiful estate country side, with stunning period costumes, and the pace that makes BBC drama the best, Scarlet and Black should be made more available for public consumption.

Personal quotes

"I find Hollywood really toxic."

"I found myself a sophisticated, educated American. He's not an actor. He's travelled the world. He knows where Europe is, unlike a lot of Americans. He's very cultured, but he's all man."

"People find out I'm an actress and I see that 'whore' look flicker across their eyes."

"I thought it was a great part for a woman," she has said. "I thought it was a character part, a comedy part. Normally women in those sorts of action movies are dippy and bimbo who just shout 'help'"

"I was so bookish. I really got into it. I was thinking of staying for a Ph.D. But it put me off of acting. I spent three years in analyzing text and doing practical criticism and all that. If you start doing that with your plays and stuff, you act really badly because you have to be quite stupid to act."

"I once made the mistake of telling someone that I always wanted to be a barrister-- and I got a pitying look, flollowed by an article along lines 'the poor little tart thinks she could get a proper job, but look at the way she photographs."

"We called it scoobydoobydoo acting. We ran around shouting 'I HATE MMMMMMUMMIES' and 'scoobydoobydoo'."

"I have absolutely no empathy for camels. I didn't care for being abused in the Middle East by those horrible, horrible, horrible creatures. They don't like people. It's not at all like the relationship between horses and humans."

"People find out I'm an actress and I see that 'whore' look flicker across their eyes."
