Title: Frida

Plot Summary: "Frida" chronicles the life Frida Kahlo (Salma Hayek) shared unflinchingly and openly with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), as the young couple took the art world by storm. From her complex and enduring relationship with her mentor and husband to her illicit and controversial affair with Leon Trotsky, to her provocative and romantic entanglements with women, Frida Kahlo lived a bold and uncompromising life as a political, artistic, and sexual revolutionary.

Comments: Salma Hayek is terrific. This is a breakthrough film for Salma Hayek. She is terrific as Frida, the 20th Century Mexican artist whose bold art and passion for life was only matched in intensity by the physical difficulties she faced in life.
Hopefully this role will enable Hayek to capture more serious scripts in the future. To date, she had been cast in "look how pretty I am" roles that featured her considerable physical beauty rather than her acting prowess. Here, she is convincing as the complex Frida and demonstrates a real range as an actress. Her performance comes at a time when Hollywood could really use a beautiful actress who can actually act.
The film itself is beautifully shot and manages to capture early-20th Century Mexico in a romantic way. The communist party subplots are amusing, particularly in our post-communism world.
