Plot
Summary: A newspaper photographer, Jean,
researches the lurid and sensational axe murder of
two women in 1873 as an editorial tie-in with a brutal
modern double murder. She discovers a cache of papers
that appear to give an account of the murders by an
eyewitness. The plot weaves between the narrative
of the eyewitness and Jean's private struggle with
jealousies and suspicions as her marriage teeters.
Comments:
Two
couples get on a yacht to (ostensibly) investigate
an early American murder. Actually, one of the women
is doing the investigation, the others are there to
fill needed cypher roles. The characters are so asinine,
the dialogue so pretentious, the situations so absurd
that I nearly just turned it off. The other part of
this movie follows the actual murder, told in a series
of flashbacks, broken up by the absurdity that is
the modern setting. That movie is actually interesting,
if somewhat predictable. The characters have real
motivations, and are so much more rounded than their
contemporaries, that it kept my interest through the
excrutiating crap in between.
