Showgirls (1995)

Title: Showgirls
Released: 1995
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 128 min
Country: USA / France
Language: English

Tagline: Beyond your wildest dreams. Beyond your wildest fantasies.

Plot Summary: Nomi Malone sets out for Las Vegas to become a showgirl. After working as a stripper, she gets her big break at a chorus line audition for the Stardust Casino production, 'Goddess.' She soon finds out that 'showbiz' is a rough-and-tumble world--is she tough enough to claw her way to the top? And if so, is it really worth it?

Comments: Elizabeth Berkley, the star of the movie who plays Nomi, puts in a stunning, Oscar-winning performance. Both men and women will find themselves captivated by Berkley's beauty. Berkley simply oozes youthfulness, energy, sexuality and positivity - which is simply addictive to watch; and her adolescent & naïve juvenile manner, voice, and sense of humour is utterly adorable and teasing. Berkley, along with her fellow cast, deliver such heart-felt, enthusiastic performances, that they manage to turn Verhoeven's & Eszterhas' sloppiness into one of the most surprisingly brilliant movies of all time...

Released: 1999
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 150 min

Tagline: Life is a contact sport.

Plot Summary: An aging football coach finds himself struggling with his personal and professional life while trying to hold his team together. A star quarterback has been knocked out of the game and a naive football player replaces him only to become exposed to the world of sports and become a danger to himself and to his players. Meanwhile, the coach finds himself constantly at battle with the team owner's money and power hungry daughter intent on moving the team out.

Comments: If you listen to Stone's commentary on the DVD, you will hear more about what this film is all about. He has some strong-ish word to say about Football and the people who run it. I have no interest in Football at all but just loved this film. My rating 8 out of 10.

Personal quotes

"Ever since those reviews for Showgirls, it's like I was that woman in The Scarlet Letter. Except that instead of having to wear the letter 'A' for adulteress, I was condemned to wear an 'S' for showgirl."
