Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000)

Title: Dancing at the Blue Iguana
Released: 2000
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 123 min
Country: USA
Language: English

Tagline: Five souls exposed

Plot Summary: An up-close and personal look, on stage and backstage, at five ecdysiasts who dance at the Blue Iguana in L.A. Stormy is melancholy and distant; a man from her past has come to town and wants to see her. Jasmine writes poetry and may have met someone - Dennis, who organizes readings at a coffee house. Angel, a ditzy stoner, wants a foster child; a Russian hitman is smitten by her. Jessie is new in town, a vulnerable adolescent who tries to act grown up. Jo is brassy, in-your-face, and pregnant. Eddie runs the place with help from Bobby. A big weekend is coming up, so he's hired Nico to headline. The women look for reassurance; some find it in each other.

Comments: Collection of very compelling scenes...Not a perfect movie by any means, yet still worth the investment in time to experience it. This is a collection of very compelling scenes with fascinating characters that almost anyone should be able to appreciate on several levels.

Glory Daze (1996)

Title: Glory Daze
Released: 1996
Genre: Comedy
Runtime: 100 min
Country: USA
Language: English

Plot Summary: It's two days before graduation, and Jack is having serious doubts about the future. The old gang is breaking up - Rob is moving to L.A. with his girlfriend; Dennis is finishing his third degree and going to grad school in Michigan; Slosh has dropped out of school and stays drunk all the time; and Mickey, who still has a year of school to go, seems tired of the scene and wishes he had the guts to tell his friend Chelsea how he feels about her. As Jack looks out at his four years in Santa Cruz, he wonders if this isn't the best time of his life, and he wonders whether it might be a mistake to let it all go just because of graduation. As his pals also get glimpses of life after college, he decides he's not going to leave, that he's going to live his glory days a little longer.

Comments: truly a beautiful slice of teenage life. I suppose the low rating this movie is running is due to all the adult votes out there. Any teenager, especially any teenager who understands the references to Camus, should love this movie. Ben Affleck turns in a wonderful performance, as per usual. That boy's delivery is scary good, and the dialogue deserved such panache, if you will. If you happen to listen to punk music, well then, you should adore this movie's soundtrack as well. It is so fitting to every scene (with the exception of the live band.) The movie is worth watching for the cameos alone: Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Janeane Garofalo, Matt Damon; all wonderful, but tiny, parts. This is certainly one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Any one who liked Dazed and Confused, to Empire Records, to (aiming a bit higher here,) The Breakfast Club, should love this movie. See it. Now.
