When Lucky arrives to Byron's apartment to make some minor repair and Marianne becomes obsessed with him, the everyday balance breaks. Comments: This gem of a movie is a beautiful, sensual, thoughtful film that should be studied by anyone interested in screenwriting. As with many of the Alan Rudolph films I've seen, 'Afterglow' seems to take place in an unworldly area of the human psyche that is both comforting and enlightening. 'Afterglow,' to me, is like a rich, fragrant cup of coffee on a blustery, cold day. Not a confusing film, but an intriguing one. Viewers learn more and more, and in the end everything is wrapped up and nothing is left without explanation. Early on it calls to mind The Lady Vanishes (1937)...but it is different than that. Later on it calls to mind, to some degree, Jacob's Ladder (1990), but it is not that film either. There are aspects that almost seem surreal, until we gradually learn what is going on - there is a definite resolution; this is not like the stereotype of a David Lynch film. A good suspense film that deals with memory and identity and their unravelling as a mystery. Lara Flynn Boyle is especially attractive here: softer and not as extremely, frighteningly thin as she has been recently. William's wife, Eleanor, has persuaded him to go to Kellogg to have his system cleaned of impurities. Kellogg is very unconventional, and almost barbaric in his treatments. Comments: Very funny and surprising. I just watched this movie because Hopkins was in it, I expected another boring Hollywood style comedy. But it turned out to be a very funny movie. It was very entertaining to me. Good acting, good story (the side story fits in perfectly also) and good jokes. Don't watch this movie if you are narrow minded and can't appreciate humor about sex, dung and bodily fluids. First her boy friend (Billy Zane) hires two dim-witted hitmen (Michael Biehn, Rob Schneider). Then she hires a former biker boy friend (Dan Aykroyd) to smother him in the hospital where he is recuperating from the first attempt. Then Zane's former wife (Lisa Edelstein) figures out what is going on and wants a part of the action. Lara Flynn Boyle also appears as a hairdresser friend who gets mixed up in the plot. Comments: I rented this movie becuase Michael Biehn was in it, and found it surprisingly good. Biehn, in his first comedic role, really shines. He brings an interesting airheadedness to the role which is a fun change to his usual mega-serious roles in other films. However, the film is also filled with humorous portayls by Lara Flynn Bolye, Nastassja Kinski and Billy Zane. Rob Schneider, Thomas Haden Church and Adrian Paul also give semi-funny performences, and Dan Akroyd plays a barely believable, but funny role as "Bob". The plot is very cliched and rather normal, but the film is very funny and the charecters interesting to watch. It was a very pleasent surprise, this film. Highly reccomended to fans of Biehn, Kinski, Boyle or just fans of good comedies.
